What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs have an oval shape, reddish-brown color, short antennae, and lack wings. They are essentially apple seeds with legs! Bed bugs are insects that rely on the blood of warm-blooded animals as their sole source of nutrition.

Bed bugs have an affinity for human blood making them to want to live near us, choosing our homes and businesses to gather. Unlike other insects, bed bugs are not social; they don't help each other succeed, but they do live together in large groups, and bed bugs can quickly take over any structure they find their way into.

Are bed bugs dangerous?

The sheer number of bed bugs that live worldwide makes them pests that we need to control. Allowing them to move to and from our homes as they please is a recipe for disaster! While bed bugs aren't currently a significant player in the spread of disease, their bites are unwanted and may lead to allergic reactions and the development of a secondary infection. Another issue with bed bugs is that dicovering them will cause sleepless nights and anxious days; no one wants to share their home with insects that feed on their blood.

Why do I have a bed bug problem?

Bed bugs are small insects, and when only a few live inside your home, it can be easy to overlook a future infestation. Unfortunately, overlooking just a few bed bugs is all it takes for a large infestation to develop. Bed bugs have adapted to living mainly indoors; therefore, the most common way they invade new structures is hitchhiking their way inside. They will move from place to place on people or on our belongings. Clothing, furniture, rugs, and boxes commonly hide bed bugs.

Where Will I Find Bed Bugs?

The most popular hiding spots for bed bugs are areas that put them near people so they can easily feed on us as we sleep.

  • The seams of mattresses and box springs
  • Upholstered furniture.
  • Cracks in headboards and footboards
  • Behind wall hangings
  • Inside of wall outlets

As bed bugs get comfortable in a space and their population grows, it is common for them to migrate throughout a structure. Though they can't fly or jump, they move quite efficiently by crawling with their six legs. They will move through walls and floors and into new areas of a home. Despite their name, bed bugs don't just stay in our bedrooms!
