What are cockroaches?

Medium to large-sized insects, cockroaches are pests that live together in large groups, drawn together by pheromones they emit from their body. They have a flattened, oval-shaped body, six legs covered in spines, and antennae longer than their body. While some species have wings, most are either incapable of flight or are weak fliers. Their flat body and dark color enable them to hide during the day, emerging at night to scavenge for food. Since cockroaches will feed on many of the same foods we do, our properties are very attractive to these pests.

In Southern California, the following types of cockroaches are most common and often find their way into our homes and businesses.

  • American cockroaches
  • Brown-banded cockroaches
  • German cockroaches
  • Oriental cockroaches

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Yes, cockroaches are incredibly dangerous pests to have lurking around our indoor and outdoor spaces. Cockroaches do not belong living with people. When they get into our homes, they cause various problems like contaminating food and surfaces, leaving piles of excrement, transmitting diseases, spreading bacteria, and triggering allergies and asthma attacks.

Why do I have a cockroach problem?

The tiniest crumb or smallest spill will cause cockroaches to want to stay in your house. No matter how clean you may think your home is, cockroaches know how to find any food debris — under appliances, under furniture, behind cupboards, or on pantry shelves.

Cockroaches are also in our homes because they provide shelter and water access through leaky pipes, dripping faucets, and moisture left behind in sinks and tubs.

Cockroaches like to live with people because they have learned our homes will provide them with easy access to all their basic needs. Why forage for food outside when you can just run to the pantry for a quick snack?

Where Will I Find Cockroaches?

Cockroaches are pests that can live inside or outside. Those living outside in areas near our homes and businesses (trees, mulch, flower beds, sewers) often find their way inside while searching for food and water, moving indoors through openings they discover in the foundation, exterior walls, and around windows and doors.

Another way that cockroaches regularly find their way into our homes is by hitchhiking. When cockroaches live inside homes or businesses, they will move to new homes or businesses inside things like boxes, appliances, furniture, bags, and deliveries.

Once inside, no matter how they entered, they will gravitate to dark, damp areas. They like to hide in tight spaces where both the top and bottom of their bodies are touching a hard surface at the same time. Common hiding spots for cockroaches include cracks in walls, wood trim, behind cupboards, baseboards, and under sinks. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and crawl spaces are where cockroaches tend to gather after finding a way into a home.

  • Clean your kitchen regularly; crumbs, dirty dishes, and sticky spills will attract cockroach activity.
  • Remove as many food sources as possible by keeping lids on trash cans and recycling bins. Do not store food out on counters.
  • Keep outdoor eating areas and the grill areas free of food debris.
  • Regularly inspect your home's exterior looking for potential entry points and sealing any openings leading inside that you discover, like gaps around windows and doors, cracks in the foundation, or around vents.
  • Humidity and moisture attract cockroaches. Repair leaky pipes, make sure your home is properly ventilated, and remove areas of standing water.
  • Always inspect deliveries and secondhand items for cockroaches before bringing them into your home.
