The spread of diseases by ticks is a serious concern. They feed over several days, allowing them to transfer pathogens from their saliva to their host successfully. In our area, ticks spread diseases like tularemia, Lyme disease, babesiosis, and ehrlichiosis.

The most common problem associated with fleas is the allergic reaction (skin dermatitis) most people and animals have to their saliva. Their bites are intensely itchy, and excessive scratching can lead to secondary infections. In animals, heavy flea infestations can cause anemia and the loss of hair. 

Why do I have a flea & tick problem?

Fleas and ticks are most active during periods of warm weather. In general, these pests are most active from March through December as this is the time of year their animal hosts are also most active. The animals travel from yard to yard foraging for food, bringing with them the fleas and ticks they are carrying on their bodies. 

Where Will I Find Fleas and Ticks?

Fleas can become a problem both inside and outside of your home. They are capable of breeding indoors and are known to develop large, difficult-to-control infestations inside homes. Outside, they are found in areas that provide the developing eggs with plenty of shade and moisture. Popular hangouts for fleas include tall grass, spaces under decks, under leaves or grass piles, or in the mulch under shrubs and bushes.

Ticks also gather in dark, damp areas and densely wooded areas are where you will find their largest populations. Other outdoor spaces where people, pets, and wild animals regularly come into contact with ticks include meadows, fields, tall grass next to beaches, and of course, our backyards!
